    Lewis Swartzentruber

    September 13, 1924 - May 25, 2020

Lewis Martin Swartzentruber passed away on Monday, May 25, 2020 at his home in Greenwood, Delaware. He was 95. He was born on September 13, 1924 in Greenwood, Delaware, the son of the late Milton Swartzentruber and Savannah Bender Swartzentruber. After his education, he married Evelyn Benner Swartzentruber on October 23, 1949 and they made their home in Greenwood. He was a farmer who also owned and operated a small farm supply business. He loved to serve his church, his customers and his community. He was a member of Greenwood Mennonite Church where he taught Sunday School, Bible School, and was involved in Cottage meetings and Prison Ministry and at one time served as the church janitor. For twenty years Lewis and his wife Evelyn provided a home for a mentally handicapped man who loved to ride in the truck with him. He loved working in his garden, enjoyed singing, playing his harmonica and in later years he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and word searches. His greatest joy was his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Evelyn Swartzentruber of Greenwood, two daughters, Fern Baker and her husband Maynard of Bassett, VA, and Ruth Ann Hays and her husband Steve of Greenwood, and one son, John David Swartzentruber and his wife Carlene of Greenwood, a daughter-in-law, Connie Holmberg and her husband Skip of Greenwood, 13 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Daniel, three brothers: Valentine, Milton and John; and two sisters: Elizabeth and Carolyn. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 2:00 at Greenwood Mennonite Church. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 on Friday evening at the church. There will also be opportunity to view the body one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Greenwood Mennonite Church Building Fund, Post Office Box 246, Greenwood, DE 19950.
