William “Bill” P. Smith of Federalsburg, Maryland passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He was 78. He was born on October 21, 1942 in McAlester, OK, the son of the late J. Charles Smith and Eleanor Noble Smith. Bill graduated from Federalsburg High School with the class of 1960. He later graduated in 1965 from Butler University with a Pharmacy degree. He married Barbara Gray Smith on September 8, 1962 and they made their home in Federalsburg after he graduated. As he started his life-long career as the neighborhood pharmacist, Bill worked for Cantner’s Drug Store in Federalsburg and later as the owner-operator of Bridgeville Pharmacy. He retired in 2008 to spend more time with his family and grandchildren. In earlier days, Bill was a Boy Scout Leader with Troop #137, a member of the Federalsburg Vol. Fire Company where he served as an ambulance driver, and a baseball umpire for many years with the Caroline County Little League. An avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed fishing, golfing, walking the riverfront, and riding his bicycle. He loved reading, watching the Baltimore Orioles, feeding the birds, drinking coffee with his buddies, and telling stories of growing up in Federalsburg. He also took great pride in his yard and lawn and was known for mowing it daily. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Gray Smith of Federalsburg, one son, R. Dean Smith and his wife Renee of Seaford, three grandchildren: Mitchell Davis Smith, Mallory Renee Smith and her fiancée Colin Kirby, of Seaford and Newark DE, and William Gray Smith, Jr of Bel Air, MD; two brothers: T. Craig Smith and his wife Cynthia of Hendersonville, NC and Richard Noble Smith; one sister, Sue S. Tafur and her husband Guido of Midlothian, VA; sister-in-law, Sondra L. Smith of College Station, TX; and a daughter-in-law, Linda B.Van Deusen of Bel Air, MD and many treasured nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a son, William Gray Smith, Sr. and a brother James Charles Smith. Services will be private.
