Alberta Horton Lewis' Obituary
Alberta Horton Lewis, known as “Ricky” passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD. She was 57.
Born July 24, 1953 in Roper, NC, she was the daughter of Rosie Lee Howell Horton of Roper, NC and the late Cassie Lee Horton.
Alberta graduated Cum Laude from Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, NC with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and a Minor in Child Psychology. During this time she had the opportunity to sing with Gladys Knight and the Pips who offered her a chance in the recording world.
Upon moving to Federalsburg “Ricky” organized and sang lead with a group known as the Voices of Determination. She also sang solo for weddings, banquets and funerals. “Ricky” was an employee of the former Preston Trucking Company for twenty-three years as Senior Road and City Payroll Specialist. Upon their closing she became a teacher for Caroline County Public schools until January 20, 2011.
She was a member of Union Bethel A.M. E. Church in Denton, MD, where she directed and sang lead for the Gospel Choir, served on the Social Hall Committee, Missionary Board, and the Lay Organizations. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Past Matron of Mary Jane Henry No. 54 Preston, MD, also a Past Grand Christian Flag Bearers, Myra Grand Chapter, O.E.S. serving as District Deputy Grand Matron of District 4.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Clarence Andrew Lewis, Sr., a daughter Jessica “Scooter” Lewis of Federalsburg, step-children, Clarence A. Lewis, Jr. (Suzette) of Philadelphia, PA, and Diana Williams Dorsey (Kimwanna) of Wilmington, DE, a special niece Alvanie Horton of Atlanta, GA, granddaughter Nah’Kayla Johnson, step-grandchildren, Ariel Lewis, Treat Lewis, Cee Lewis, and Anzsanae Williams, sisters and brothers Brenda Mixon (Mark)of Columbia, NC, Carrie Ruffin (David) of Newport News, VA, Betty Horton of Roper, NC, Lesia Horton of Myersville, PA, Rosemary Horton of Roundrock, TX, Vivian Horton of Plymouth, NC, Angelique Mason (Roger)of Atlanta, GA, Rosetta Skinner (James), Linnetta Horton, and Cassie Lee Horton, Jr., all of Roper, NC, special sisters, Laura Davis Stern of Oxon Hill, MD and Sandra Beulah of Federalsburg, and a host of nieces, nephews and God children.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Easton with Rev. Clarence Hawkins and Rev. Pearl Geter officiating. Interment will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock, MD. Friends may call on Thursday at the Union Bethel Church in Denton from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with an Eastern Star Service at 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
