I awoke this morning at 2 am having a DREAM about AJ!!! I had no idea she had passed away - but knowing her since 1959 (as I was a summer student there for 4 years - and knew both Romeo AND AJ and their young family), I was very saddened! What a wonderful person she was - and so multi-talented! I have only seen her once since she married Bob Lippson - but I still think of her bubbly and talented self as she was in those days. My heart goes out to the family- as she will leave a huge void. I love the photo of her on this page - it shows "the real AJ" - as she was in Solomons in those days. I, too, was widowed at a young age (34) and it was no easy thing raising children alone - and getting them educated, married, etc. I wish I had known she had passed - as I would have attended her funeral (even though I live in Newark, DE).

AJ was such an exuberant person! Her mood and enthusiasm were infectious! Marijka and I especially enjoyed our camping expedition on Onkakonk (Okracoke) Island that included AJ and Bob.

Her talents as an illustrator were magnificent, as anyone who has seen the books she and Bob put out would know.

Bob, we extend to you our very heartfelt sympathies!

I first met AJ and Bob back in 1974 when I was in Easton looking for a home prior to being transferred to the Oxford Laboratory. They were kind enough to invite me to stay in their home while I searched and I had the opportunity to meet their family.

Over the years with Bob as my supervisor I learned and grew as an individual from them both and my family became friends with them. I recall the field trips that Bob and I arranged for the MSU folks who came every year with grad. students to collect marine specimens. Our trips were often joined by AJ and I specially recall the trips to the NMFS Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina where we collected by day and played cards at night.

Forty plus years are filled with great memories of them both and I consider them as a second set of parents following mine passing early in life. I am forever grateful for their advice and support they provided.

AJ and Bob built their home in Easton back in the early 1970’s to provide a place where new memories could be formed with their newly blended family. We are so fortunate to have lived in that house for the past 20 years and to have raised our own children here.

A number of years ago, Eleanor & Will Lockwood, friends and neighbors who were close friends with AJ & Bob, hosted a dinner so we could meet each other. We are so grateful to have had that chance to meet them, hear their stories of building and living in our house, and even getting the answer to why their was a dedicated electrical circuit for a kiln! We were riveted by their stories - AJ meeting with The Galloping Gourmet in our living room as she illustrated his cook book, Bob’s tales of his research in the Bay and surrounding waters. We both work in the field of marine and estuarine science and were so honored to have that evening with them. What a gift.

Thanks AJ. Rest In Peace.

All at CBL express our heartfelt condolences. AJ played an important role in research conducted at CBL for more than a decade. She was a gifted illustrator and a superb naturalist. But more than that she was a close friend to many at the lab from that era who will be greatly saddened at her passing. A life well lived indeed
