Aulby Bliss Bates, Jr.'s Obituary
Aulby Bliss Bates, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on September 28, 2024. He was born in Oxford on July 29, 1930, to Margaret Harper Bates and Aulby Bliss Bates, Sr.
Aulby grew up in Oxford, MD. He was a lifelong Eastern Shoreman hunting, crabbing, fishing and enjoying the "Shore" way of life. He also enjoyed skeet shooting and volunteering at the Waterfowl Festival. He will be remembered for his sense of humor which remained until the end.
Aulby graduated from Easton High School in 1948 and married the late Helen S. Willey of Oxford. They had two children, Aulby Bliss Bates III (Lee) and Margaret "Peggy" Favinger (Joe).
After graduation he began work as a lineman and installer for C&P telephone and retired from Verizon. In addition, he served in the Maryland National Guard for many years.
On December 31, 1993, he married the late Merle Thompson Young. They spent many happy years crabbing, fishing, dancing at the Moose Lodge, and traveling to Florida for the winter where they loved spending time with their FL friends and especially Happy Hours with their very special sister-in-law, Kay Thompson.
In addition to his children, Aulby, fondly known as "Pop-Pop" and "Pa-pa" is survived by granddaughters, Jennifer Dunker (Matt) and Melissa Cummins (John); grandson, Thomas Ringgold III; granddaughter, Katie Favinger (Paul); great-grandchildren Nate Dunker, Maddie Dunker, TJ Ringgold, Tanner Cummins, Trenton Cummins (Kayla), Trace Cummins, Darcy Favinger, and Abigail Favinger; great-great grandchildren Bentlie, Parker, and Zoie Cummins. He is also survived by Shirley Bigelow (Gary) and additional extended family members by marriage.
A graveside service will be held at Oxford Cemetery on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Talbot Rod & Gun Club or the Waterfowl Festival.
