Bernice H. West's Obituary
ernice Hortense West, was born on May 1, 1942, in Laurel, Delaware to the late Vassa West and the late Addie Oney West. She received her elementary education at the Ross Point School and W.T. Jason High School, both in Sussex County. She earned a BS Degree from Delaware State College, in Dover, Delaware.
Bernice taught in an elementary school, in the Cecil County School District. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. A lifelong member of St. John AME Zion Church (Ross Point) she served as the Annual Conference Delegate for a period of time and also served on the youth and Young Adult Choir. She was known for her gift of writing poems.
Bernice was preceded in death by both parents, a brother, Melvin West and a sister, Ruth West. She leaves to cherish their memory of her, a brother, Kermit West (Smryna, Delaware), a sister, Shirley Dillard (Wilmington, Delaware) a son, Eugene West (Laurel, Delaware), whom she devoted her life and career, and four aunts, Ardella Giles, Reba Gaines, Retta Oney, and Margaret West, (all of Laurel), and a host of relatives and friends. Donald West, a devoted nephew, who cherished her like a sister, Dr. Cora Norwood Selby, her former teacher, and Sarah Selby, a special friend are among those who shared a special closeness.
