Carol Payne Gadsby's Obituary
Carol Payne Gadsby, age 72, passed away on the evening of Saturday, January 8, 2022, in St. Michaels, Maryland, surrounded by her family. There will be a private Celebration of Life in the spring.
She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 5, 1949. Raised in Catonsville, Maryland, she was the beloved daughter of the late Ernst W. Payne and Louise Elizabeth Payne (Maisel). She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland, in 1971. She earned a Master of Science in Education from John Hopkins University in 1989 and a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from Loyola College in 1999.
Carol was an educator who was committed to helping elementary school children. From 1971 to 1974, she was a French teacher in the Baltimore County Public Schools. From 1982 to 1996, she taught and worked as an administrator at Glenelg Country School. From 2000 to 2013, she worked as a school psychologist in the Caroline and Queen's Anne County Public Schools.
In 1971, she married the late John E. Gadsby of Baltimore. They lived and raised their family in Baltimore until moving to St. Michaels in 1999. Carol and John's complementary temperaments served them well throughout their 42-year marriage. She was devoted to their marriage and remained so during John's prolonged battle with cancer.
Carol was a strong and independent person, who loved to travel, and she enjoyed many trips to the Caribbean and to Europe. She enjoyed reading a book beside the pool or on a beach, but played crew to John on his sailing adventures. She loved to read mystery novels and contemporary fiction, particularly works written by local authors. Carol and John were also avid cribbage players, and passed their love of reading, sailing, and game playing on to their children and grandchildren.
Among other community groups and associations, she was active for many years at Salem Lutheran Church in Catonsville, where she served as the editor of the newsletter; her parents also had been faithful parishioners of that church, and Carol's membership in the Salem community was very meaningful to her. Carol was a loving and devoted grandmother even though she struggled with health problems in most recent years.
Carol is survived by her son, David, his wife Joanna and their children, Rhys and Drew; her daughter Megan, Megan's partner Wing and his daughter Charlotte; her son Eric, his wife Sarah Kiley and their children, Rosemary and Bram; her sister-in-law, Kathey Payne; and her beloved and loyal personal assistant, Debbie Bridges. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, and brother Thomas E Payne.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol's memory may be made to Washington College, the Schooner Sultana Foundation, or Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD. 21601.
