Charles W. Coulbourne, Jr.'s Obituary
Charles W. Coulbourne, Jr. of Hurlock passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at his daughter Beth and Robert's home in Hurlock, MD. He was 92.
He was born on January 11, 1931 in Williamsburg, Dorchester County, Maryland, the son of the late Charles Wright Coulbourne, Sr. and Esther Griffith Coulbourne.
He attended Dorchester County Public Schools. On January 28, 1952 he married Bessie Wheatley and they made their home in Hurlock. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2022 after 70 years of marriage.
Mr. Coulbourne or "Pop-Pop" as he was known in the community was employed at the Hurlock Bakery and Parkers International until they both closed. Later he worked for the Town of Hurlock as the maintenance mechanic.
He was a life-long member of the Hurlock Wesleyan Church.
He served for 72 years with the Hurlock Vol. Fire Company, holding almost every rank in his tenure there. His positions included Trustee, Assistant Engineer, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain, Assistant Fire Chief and Safety Officer. In 2005 he was inducted into the Dorchester County Hall of Fame and in 2008 was inducted into the Delmarva Hall of Fame for the fire service. He truly loved to serve his community.
He is survived by four children: Timothy W. Coulbourne and his wife Linda, Connie A. Foglesonger and her husband Donnie, Elizabeth A. Hurley and her husband Robert and Charles W. Coulbourne, III and his wife Shirley; eight grandchildren: T.C. Coulbourne, Mark Coulbourne and his wife Dawn, Christa Tindall and her husband John, Bruce Folglesonger and his wife Karly, Jason Hurley and his wife Bree, Alison Hurley, Chucky Coulbourne and Heather Whaley and her husband Nick; two step-grandchildren: Tommy Ebeling and Sarah Sherman and her husband Ryan; fourteen great-grandchildren: Emma, Madelyn and Meredith Coulbourne, A.J. Willey, LJ Tindall, Bruce Folgesonger, Riley Hurley, Kenna Clark, Kayden and Charlie Coulbourne, Clinton and Jonathan Whaley, Coco and Camden Sherman; a brother Robert Coulbourne and his wife Sharon; two sisters: Betty Lee Williamson and husband George and Jeanette Blade and husband Roger; and a sister-in-law Faye Bramble Crumbley and husband Walt, a special caregiver Kathy Humphries and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Wayne Coulbourne and a brother Billy Coulbourne.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 12:00 at the Hurlock Vol Fire Company, 301 Charles Street in Hurlock. The Reverend Rick Parker will officiate. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 12:00.
