Diana Q. Mautz's Obituary
St. Michaels - Diana Quatman Mautz, of St. Michaels, peacefully departed Thursday, March 14, 2024, at home, surrounded by family, friends, and prayer. Diana was born on March 29, 1944 in Galion, Ohio to Frank and MaryGene Quatman. Diana Quatman-Mautz was raised in Lima, Ohio along with her sister, Melinda Quatman-Mooney, and two brothers, Greg and Frank Thomas ("Tommy" or "TQ") Quatman, and many extended relatives in the Quatman family. Diana graduated from Lima Central Catholic High School where along with her academics, she was mentored by Monsignor Edward C. Herr. In addition to her childhood experiences in Lima, Diana spent many summers with the Quatman family at Indian Lake in Russells Point, Ohio, where she developed an eternal love of sailing. Diana attended Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois before meeting her husband, Dr. John F. Mautz, III, at a regatta in Mentor, Ohio. The two married on December 16, 1967 in Lima, Ohio. Diana gave birth to her son John F. Mautz, IV in 1970 while at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter the family moved to St. Michaels to follow Diana's true love of sailing. In 1974, Diana gave birth to another love of her life, her son Daniel F. Mautz. Later in 1979, unbeknownst to her husband, Diana purchased Carpenter Street Saloon (C-Street) in St. Michaels, which still operates today as one of the remaining iconic Eastern Shore gathering spots. Unfortunately, in 2011 Diana suffered a severe stroke and although she was expected to be permanently paralyzed, within a year she was able to live independently. In 2018 Diana opened a new business in St. Michaels, Diana's Tilton Hilton - a candy, hot sauce, and gift shop. On March 14, Diana succumbed to critical health complications stemming from her stroke in 2011.
Diana was preceded in death by her husband John Frederick Mautz, III, brothers TQ and Greg Quatman.
Diana is survived by her two sons, Dan Mautz and Johnny Mautz; two grandchildren, Johnny and Evelyn Mautz; her sister and brother-in laws, Melinda and Tom Mooney, and Karen Quatman; nieces and nephews, Michelle (Robert) Ritchy and Kelley (Todd) Myer, Jenna Quatman, and Tom (Ann) and Eddie (Ally) Mooney; and numerous grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her late husband's family, sister in-law, Elsa Stafford, and nephews, Alan (Raphiela) and Robert Adamson; sister in-law, Kathy (Ed) Kocan, and nephews, Jay (Elizabeth) and Jonathan (Kim) Kocan; brother in-law, William Chadwell, and nephews and nieces, Jane (Alan) Mast, Tina Heath, Marty (Bonnie) Chadwell, and Keith (Liz) Chadwell.
Diana led a life that was founded in Catholic faith, she was filled with determination and lived without fear. At a young age, when her mother passed, she began a long history of care giving. If it needed to get done, Diana was there to see to it was done. In her teens, Diana was very active in sailing in Ohio, particularly at Indian Lake. She also developed an intuition for the hospitality industry working at the San Juan Amusement Park at Indian Lake, which was owned and operated by her grandfather, George B. Quatman, Sr.
Diana led a 50-year commitment to leadership and mentorship through sailing in both Ohio and the Eastern Shore. During this time, she built one of the largest junior sailing programs on the East Coast; has directed junior sailing programs at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the Tred Avon Yacht Club, the Miles River Yacht Club, and what was then known as the Talbot County YMCA. She has also served on the board of the US Junior Sailing Championships. Through sailing she has touched the lives of thousands of children.
As the owner and operator of Carpenter Street Saloon, she was an invincible force shaping the St. Michaels Business Association and helping to transform the local economy from a sleepy waterfront town into a booming destination for visitors from around the world.
In doing so, she has also spearheaded many philanthropic efforts such as an unparalleled private fundraising campaign to support the St. Michaels and Tilghman Island Volunteer Emergency Responders.
Most importantly to Diana, was her ability to find anyone who needed help and offer them assistance to ensure they could succeed if they were willing to commit to success. In her 54 years in St. Michaels, she never missed an opportunity to support a community-led effort or a person in need.
In every place where she lived, Diana found a way to organize, encourage, and lead volunteers to meet community needs. Diana was a woman who shattered glass ceilings before such a thing existed and she took comfort doing all of this in virtual anonymity until much later in her life.

Ironically and at approximately the same time, a devastating tornado struck the Quatman family home and amusement park in Indian Lake, Ohio, where Diana held so many fond memories. Diana was fierce competitor, she was filled with love and compassion and following her stroke her motto was "never, never, never give up."
She loved people, and in particular, children, and grandchildren. Grand Diana's greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren, Johnny and Evelyn Mautz.
