Donald Chesley Challoner's Obituary
Donald C. Challoner, 91, of Wittman, MD, passed away on Aug. 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Feb. 10, 1933, in South Weymouth, MA, Don was the only son of James C. and Olga Challoner. His early years were filled with joyful memories at his ancestors' home in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where he developed a passion for the sea and sailing.
Don's life took a significant turn when he joined the Air Force after school, embarking on many adventures as a weatherman in Newfoundland. He loved sharing these stories, and anyone who knew him can attest that you might have heard them more than once!
During a visit to the Adirondack's in upstate NY, Don met the love of his life, Marianne. Despite their language differences-she spoke German and he spoke English-they connected through the universal language of love, forging a bond that would last a lifetime. Together, they founded "Skipper Craft" in NJ, where they raised their two children. Don was actively involved in the Metedeconk River Yacht Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Jaguar Club, and the Antique & Classic Boat Society.
Later, Don and Marianne moved to FL before eventually settling in Wittman, MD, where Don would often say, "This is my favorite place to be." Adding new friends and lifelong companions to their circle was a treasure they held dear. He continued his community involvement as a member of SASES, the Rotary Club, and various volunteer organizations.
Despite facing health challenges, Don lived a life filled with joy and fulfillment. He was a devoted husband to Marianne (Hagemann) and a loving father to Audrey Challoner-Desjardins and Stuart Challoner, as well as their spouses, Alexander Desjardins and Debra Leone Challoner. He took great pride in being a grandfather to Duncan and Campbell Challoner.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21st, 11 a.m. at St. Michaels Mission Church, 109 Lincoln Ave., St. Michaels MD 21663.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Alzheimers Research c/o BrightFocus Foundation, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
