Dorothy Mae Wongus' Obituary
Dorothy Mae Potter-Wongus, daughter of the late Norris Wood Potter Sr. and Hazel Olivia Spry-Potter. She was born in Dorchester County on March 9, 1936. She went home to eternal rest on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at her home surrounded by family.
“Dot”, as she was affectionately called, was educated in the Dorchester County School System. She was employed through the Dorchester County Board of Education where she retired after 35 years. Dot was a member of Mt. Zion UMC, now Faith Community UMC in East New Market, MD.
Besides going to church, Dot enjoyed shopping with her two sisters, Lena and Ann, and Dot also enjoyed talking amongst family and friends about, “her boys”, Da’Jon and DaVeion.
Dot entered holy matrimony with Stephen A. Wongus on January 30, 1960. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen A. Wongus, her parents, Norris and Hazel Potter, her brother, Norris Potter Jr., and a sister, Lena Mae Potter Young.
Dot leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Martin Potter of Federalsburg, MD, a granddaughter, whom Dot and Stephen raised as their own daughter, TeShonda Thomas of Hurlock, MD, two great-grandsons, who were the joys of her life, Da’Jon and Da’Veion Pittman of Hurlock, MD, four brothers, Rudell Potter (Alice) of Dover, DE, Douglas Potter (Lorraine) of Browns Mills, NJ, Anthony Potter (Yuha) of Las Vegas, NV, Charles Potter (Demetria) of Hurlock, MD, three sisters, Anna Wongus of Hurlock, MD, Sulla Parker of Wilmington, DE, and Jacqueline Jefferson (Jeff) of Jacksonville, FL, and a host of nieces and nephews. Dot had one special niece, Deatrice “Taffy” Copper who stuck by her side through her illness. She was also Mom-Mom Dot to JaTyra Heath, Tyneshia Heath, and Ryshawn Scott.
Funeral Services will be held at Faith Community United Methodist Church in East New Market at 1:00pm with a visitation from 12:00-1:00pm on Friday, September 1, 2017 with Pastor Turhan Potter officiating. Internment will be at Petersburg Cemetery in Hurlock, MD immediately following the service.
