Capt. Douglas G. Phillips
Easton, Capt. Douglas G. Phillips U.S.N. Retired of Easton, died at the Talbot Hospice House on Friday, June 17, 2011. He was 94.
Born on April 9, 1917 in Rochester, N.Y. he was the son of the late Cyrus and Lena Bennett Phillips. He was a graduate of the Merchant Marines Academy. He received his commission as Ensign USNR in 1939. He arrived at Pearl Harbor the day before it was attacked. He was on board the USS Ramsey. During his career with the Navy, he was stationed in Samoa, Alaska, Japan and Long Beach, CA. He retired in 1965 as Director of the Machinery Division with the Bureau of Ships in Washington, D.C. Upon his retirement from the Navy he worked for De Laval Turbine, American University of Beirut, Lebanon and Maryland’s Dept of the Environment, this was followed by service as county Engineer for Talbot Co. and treasurer for the Tilghman Island Volunteer Fire Department. In the 1960’s he and his wife Shirley, purchased a 38 acre farm in Sherwood, Maryland. Shortly after the death of his wife, Capt. Phillips moved to Easton.
He is survived by two sons; Michael Phillips and Bruce Phillips, a brother; Warren Phillips his Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at the Maryland Veteran Cemetery Chapel, Hurlock, on Friday July 22, 2011 at 2:00P.M.
