Edward Alexander (Alex) Grant's Obituary
Alex Grant
Neavitt, Alex Grant passed away on August 6, 2013, surrounded by loving family, at his home in Neavitt, Md. He died peacefully after a long fought battle with mesothelioma. He was 72. Alex was born in Wilmington Delaware, the only child of Edward and Harriet Grant. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design from 1961-1965, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. It was also at RISD that Alex met his wife Alicia, the love of his life. After college Alex and Alicia were part owners of Despy, a fine craft and jewelry making business. After a few years of traveling to promote their work, Alex and Alicia settled down in New York, where they had two children. Fatherhood was one of the ultimate joys of Alex’s life, but the added responsibility had him make the transition from fine artist to commercial artist in 1972. Alex and Alicia retired in 1999 and moved to Neavitt, Md. Over the next 14 years, in spite of illness, they were able to follow their dreams and focus on the fine arts. This was an extremely productive time for Alex. He was able to develop the unique style which he had been working on throughout his career. During this time he showed his work in New York, Chestertown, and Rehoboth. Alex is survived by his wife Alicia, and two children: Susan of Nantucket, Massachusetts; and James of Mansfield, Connecticut; and his grandchildren Grant and Max Beebe of Nantucket, Massachusetts. A memorial gathering will be held at his studio in Neavitt, Maryland at 3:00PM on Saturday, August 10th. Please call the family for details. Arrangements are by the Ostrowski Funeral Home St. Michaels, MD.
