Ella Anna Hackett's Obituary
Ella Anna Hackett died at Atria Senior Living on the afternoon of June 17, 2015 where she had
resided since suffering a brain hemorrhage on December 31, 2009. She was would have been 97 years old on August 6.
Born August 6, 1918 in Astoria, Long Island, NY she was the only daughter of Charles and Ella Ruzicka Kozich. In 1922 her only sibling Charles Emil Kozich, was born. Ella graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1936. In September 1936 the Kozichs moved to Federalsburg, MD
where her father had accepted a job as manager of the Excelsior Pearl Works.
She married Harry H Hackett on January 1, 1942 at the Kozich home on Maple Ave. She and Mr. Hackett later purchased a home on Liberty Road (Rifkin Village). Mr. Hackett passed away in 2003. They were not blessed with children, but treated their many nieces and nephews and the
Meredith neighbors as “their” children. During her husband’s service in the US Army in WWII, Ella was employed by the Excelsior Pearl Works. In 1939 she accepted a job at the MD Plastics, Inc and retired in 1980 after 41 years of service as bookkeeper. She was a career woman in the days before many women worked outside the home.
She enjoyed spending time with her family both in NY and MD. She also liked keeping in touch with friends and relatives by practicing the almost lost art of letter writing. She and Harry visited often with family and friends, especially his WWII army “buddies.” They also lovingly placed flags on the graves of war veterans at appropriate times of the year. She was a collector of antique lamps and attended auctions and yard sales searching for additions to her collection. She was an
avid reader, still reading at least 2 books a week at age 96. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching her relative Wally Szczerbiak play alongside Lebron James during their days with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
She was a member of Christ U M Church in Federalsburg, of AARP, the Blood Bank of Delmarva, the Federalsburg Branch of the Caroline County Library and the Federalsburg Historical Society.
She was a Charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 5246 where she served as Treasurer for 20 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #62 Caroline Chapter and served as the Conductress for 20 years.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Ellen Kozich of Salisbury, a niece Peggy and her husband Alan Selser of Salisbury, nieces Joyce Lewis of Federalsburg, Terri Stone of Germantown, and nephews Bruce Anthony of Federalsburg and Kevin Hackett of Easton. She is also survived by 9 great nieces and nephews, a beloved cousin Mildred “Mimi” Wynn of Huntington, NY and Mimi’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and many dear friends, especially her
lifetime best friend Rose Mead of Federalsburg and the Meredith family formerly of Federalsburg. Besides her parents, brother and husband, she was preceded in death by many aunts, uncles,
cousins and dear friends.
A visitation will be held at the Framptom Funeral Home 216 N Main Street Federalsburg on Friday June 24 beginning at 12 p.m., and the funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. The officiant is Rev Dan Walker, retired pastor of Christ UM Church. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in
Federalsburg following the funeral service where she will be laid to rest beside her father, mother, and husband.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Hackett’s care givers especially Linda, Missy and Howard who have lovingly cared for her for the last five 1/2 years at Atria Senior Living in Salisbury.
