Emma Marie Bowens' Obituary
Emma Marie Bowens of Hurlock passed away on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 at The Memorial Hospital at Easton, Maryland. She was 84.
She was born July 20, 1927 in East New Market, MD, the daughter of the late Cornelius Henry McGrath and Emma Flossie Helena Lee McGrath.
She graduated from F.D. St. Clair High School, and from Maryland State Teacher’s College at Bowie, MD, achieving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with further certification as Advanced Professional in the field of Elementary/Middle School education. She was employed for 31 years as an educator with Dorchester County Public Schools. She appeared in WHO’s WHO IN AMERICAN EDUCATION and received numerous awards for volunteering, writing and promoting education of the young. She will be remembered as a Life Long Educator. Her interests included writing, as she was avid writer of poems, short stories, memories and life experience accounts, photography, flowers, hunting for arrowheads and old artifacts, and educating anyone who would listen.
She is survived by a son, Edison A. Bowens and his wife, Cheryl, of Easton, MD, 4 grandchildren, Nehemiah C. Bowens of NJ, Aaron A. Bowens and his wife Crystal, of Glen Burnie, MD, Whitney D. Bowens of Easton, and Kelley D. Deshields and her husband Demond of Upper Marlboro, MD, 4 great-grandchildren Dashaun Bowens, Sidney M. Deshields, Kolby N. Lewis, Demond C. L. Deshields, Jr., special godson Rudolph Franklin Tilgman, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Edison “Bob” Bowens who died on March 14, 2009, a daughter Elva Marie Bowens who died April 26, 2009, and 2 siblings Henry Fletcher McGrath and Martha Lillian McGrath Johnson.
A funeral will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at 1p.m. at the Framptom Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Brother Alvin Copper officiating. Friends may call the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in East New Market Cemetery.
