Evelyn B. Somers
St. Michaels, Evelyn Buren Somers of St. Michaels, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, on Wednesday February 15, 2012. She was 83.
Born on November 4, 1928 in Oxford, MD. she was the daughter of the late Malory Buren Crockett and Ollie Rose Duncan Crockett. She graduated from Easton High School in 1945, and married Alfred Henckel in1948. Mrs. Somers worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Memorial Hospital, Easton, and the Rio Vista Nursing Home in St. Michaels. She began a second career as a food prep. person (now known as a sou’s chef) a job she took very seriously, working at various Restaurants including the Town Dock in St. Michaels, and the Bridge Restaurant in Tilghman. In 1969 she married William “Bill” Somers, they made their home in Tilghman and later moved to St. Michaels. Mrs. Somers retired in 1980. Mr. Somers died in 1999.
Mrs. Somers was a member of the Tilghman United Methodist Church as well as Sisters of the Pocahontas of Red Mans Hall in St. Michaels, and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Miles River Yacht Club.
Mrs. Somers is survived by five children; Frank Henckel of St. Michaels, Brenda Mollick of Easton, Malory B. Henckel of Orlando, FL., Debbie Garrett of Easton and Jeff Henckel of Cambridge. Eleven grandchildren; Brian Henckel, Kelly Henckel, Jenny Henckel, Jonathan Mollick, Christina Henckel, Jessica Henckel, Matt Garrett, Taylor Garrett, Kevin Henckel, Ashley Henckel, and Nathan Henckel and six Great-grandchildren; Andrew, Molly, Julie, Brycen, Alyssa and Hailey. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three sisters; Anna Geib, Ethel Mehan, and Mannie Carroll.
She lived her life for her five children every minute. Then came the grandchildren, then she really began to live her life. And now she is like the wind you can feel her, but you can’t see her and with that she will always be with us.
Funeral service will be held at the Hurley & Ostrowski Funeral Home P.A. St. Michaels on Monday February 20, 2012 at1:00PM. Where friends may call from 11:00AM until time of service.
Burial will follow in the Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Md.
