Frederick Eugene Startt's Obituary
Frederick Eugene Startt of Preston, Maryland passed away under the care of hospice on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at his son's home in Federalsburg, Maryland. He was 94 years old.
Fred was born on June 12, 1930 in Easton, Maryland to the late Clyde and Maude (Cannon) Startt. He left school at an early age to begin working, and in 1947 he joined the Navy. He was honorably discharged three years later and returned to the Eastern Shore. Fred married the former Rhoda Bramble on December 18, 1951. She passed away in March of 2022.
Fred was a contractor who could take part in many aspects of a building project and his work can be seen all over the area. He taught himself to read and draft blueprints, and was the foreman for the building of the Holiday Inn just to mention one project.
Once living in Preston, Fred became very active in the Preston Volunteer Fire Company of which he was a life member. As a member of the fire company he was instrumental in putting into service the fire company's first ambulance. Fred furthered his first aid training and later became the instructor to others who would serve on the ambulance. In addition to the fire company, Fred was a member of the VFW and the American Legion, a past member of the Easton Elks Club, and "The Poor Boys Yacht Club". When not involved in community organizations or working, Fred enjoyed the usual outdoor activities of gardening, fishing, and crabbing. And of course loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and later on great-grandchildren. His "extended family" included his beloved dogs Katie, Sadie, and Duke just to name a few of them over the years.
Fred is survived by two children: Wayne Startt and his wife Patti of Federalsburg, and Donna Argo of East Prairie, MO; four grandchildren: Johnny Roach and Brad Heckler of East Prairie, MO, Wayne Startt, Jr. and his wife Carly of Federalsburg and Amanda Startt (John Hammer)of Greensboro; three great grandchildren: Landon Somerville, and Grace and Emersyn Startt; and one brother-in-law: Melvin Bramble and his wife Sandra of Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions in Fred's memory be made to Compass Regional Hospice, 160 Coursevall Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.
All services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
