Fredrick W. Herold, Sr.
Tilghman, Fredrick William Herold, Sr. of Tilghman, died at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury on Saturday, January 11, 2014. He was 79.
Born on May 22, 1934 in Brooklyn, N. Y. he was the son of the late William F. and Antoinette Sibarium Herold. Mr. Herold attended public school in Brooklyn, and Staten Island. After graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was trained as a Radar Technician. He served in Korea during the Korean conflict. Having received a Purple Heart for wounds inflicted while in battle, he was honorably discharged and he returned to New York. Mr. Herold then attended CCNY to advance his training in radar technology. Thereafter Mr. Herold began his career with NASA. Mr. Herold was a pioneer with NASA. He was responsible for inventing the system which allowed the world to track the Apollo Astronauts on the far side of the moon.
After he left NASA, he formed his own consulting firm, and continued to work as a private contractor with NASA until the 2003. His love of aeronautics and flying led him to open his own flight school where he remained active until his retirement.
In the late 1990’s he moved to Tilghman.
Mr. Herold is survived by his loving wife of 21 years Kristina C. Herold, of Tilghman; five children; one brother, and 11 Grandchildren.
Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made online to the American Diabetes Association Donations, and make it in honor of Fredrick W Herold, Sr.
