Gloria H. Durham's Obituary
Gloria Huebel Durham of Federalsburg, MD passed away on September 12, 2014 at Caroline Nursing Home, Denton, MD. She was 83.
She was born June 2, 1931 in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of the late Ella Hromadnick Huebel and Charles Huebel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob)Stewart Durham, Jr.
Gloria graduated from Patterson High School in the class of 1949. Gloria and Bob were married October 28, 1951. They moved to Caroline County in 1959. In 1968, Gloria was hired to work as a teller at the Federalsburg branch of Denton National Bank. Despite several name changes, Gloria remained at the location until she retired in 1993, as vice-president of Bank of Maryland. She was a past president of the Rotary Club in Federalsburg and one of the first women in the country to serve as president of a Rotary Club. Gloria also had served as a member of the Republican Central Committee, the National Association of Banking Women, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for Federalsburg, and also served as Economic Development Coordinator for Caroline County. She also wrote a weekly article entitled the Concord Corner for the local paper im the 1960’s. Her hobbies included gardening, exercising, singing, traveling, playing piano and listening to big band music.
She is survived by her daughter, Dianna Whitby, a daughter-in-law, Glinda Durham, four grandchildren, Tina Ledford, Robert Whitby, Brent Durham and Joseph Durham, six great-grandchildren, Alana Chester, Gavin Lane, Kai Lane, Connor Spedden, Brooks Whitby and Reece Durham, all of Federalsburg. She was preceded in death by her son Lawrence Durham and her sister Evelyn Kellum.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 at Concord Church, Federalsburg, MD at 2 p.m. where friends may visit with the family from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The Rev. Jim Michael will officiate. Burial will follow at the Concord Cemetery, Federalsburg, MD.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund at Concord United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 461, Denton, MD 21629.
