Harrison E. Leonard
St. Michaels, Harrison Earle Leonard of St. Michaels, died at the William Hill Manor, Easton, MD. on Wednesday. June 19, 2013. He was 89. Born on August 14, 1923 in Easton, he was the son of the late Earle A. and Edna Harrison Leonard. Harrison was a lifelong resident of St. Michaels, where he attended public school, graduating 2nd in his class in 1940. After graduating he attended the Baltimore Business School, in Baltimore. Harrison worked for a brief time in Baltimore, then in Washington, D.C. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a Sargent with Headquarters S.A.C. in Washington, D.C. Following his release from active duty he returned to St. Michaels, there he began to work with his uncle S. Hambleton Harrison in his Funeral Business. Harrison enrolled in the Eckels Mortuary School in Philadelphia, PA., and became a licensed funeral director, in the early fifties, he continued to work with his uncle until his untimely death in 1968, at that time Harrison took over the business which became known as the Harrison E. Leonard Funeral Home. Harrison and his family also served the Bay Hundred area community by answering the fire house phones for the St. Michaels Fire Department, as calls would come in they would sound the alarm from a system installed in their home, this was before the days of Talbot Center. He enjoyed being a part of the community and serving the public, he retired from funeral service in 2003. Mr. Leonard was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in St. Michaels, where he served on various committees and was church secretary for many years, he was a member of Granite Lodge 177 A.F & A.M. in St. Michaels for more than 50 years, he served as master in 1967. Mr. Leonard is survived by his life- long friend Margaret S. Bryan and her family, of Easton, as well as many dear friends in and around St. Michaels. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved sister; Dorothy Leonard a well know Talbot Co. school teacher and former principal of Easton High School A graveside service will be held at the Olivet Cemetery, St. Michaels, on Thursday June 27, 2013 at 10:30AM. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Michaels Fire Dept. 1001 S. Talbot St. St. Michaels, MD. Arrangements are by the Ostrowski Funeral Home, St. Michaels, MD.
