Harry H. Rieck, Jr.'s Obituary
Harry Hugo Wilhelm Rieck, Jr., 88, of Preston, Maryland entered into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, October 04, 2014 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He was the eldest son born on May 17, 1926 to the late Harry and Eleanor Rieck.
Harry served his country as a MP in the US Army following WW II in occupied Germany and received the WW II Victory Medal. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Agriculture with a degree in Poultry Science and spent over 40 years farming in the Preston area. Along with his family, he was a founder of the Southern States Co-op in Preston. Harry was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, sung as a tenor in the choir for 62 years and served the church in many capacities including the Board of Elders and Church Council with many terms as President.
In the community, Harry was a Board member for People’s Bank for over 30 years including several years as Chairman, a member of the Caroline Nursing Home Board, a former President of the Preston Elementary PTA, a member of the Lions Club, and a volunteer at the Lutheran Mission Society in Cambridge.
You could find Harry delivering loaves of his freshly baked bread to family, friends, and shut-ins in the community. After farming, he continued to have a bountiful garden which he shared with family and friends. Harry was an avid Oriole fan, loved to read, and enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad.
Harry is survived by his wife of 21 years, Iris Bond Rieck; his 6 children with his first wife: Janellen Lewis (Raine), Angela Rieck-Reiner (Jeff), Patrice Miller (Herb), Harry Rieck III (Sharon), Daniel Rieck (Anne Marie), and Jennifer Stevens (Kevin); and 13 grandchildren: Jessica Wittemen (Jason), Jacquelyn Gulick(Josh Ayers), Janelle Gulick, David Miller, Daniel Miller, Kyle Stevens, Cooper Stevens, Daniel Rieck, Jr., Alanna Reiner, Alison Rieck, Caroline Miller, Harry “Will” Rieck IV, and Benny Rieck; one great granddaughter Eleanor Wittemen; his siblings, Victor Rieck (Vera), Eleanor Kardash (Mike), and Esther Smith (Jack); many nieces and nephews; 3 step-children: Connie Overington (Ed), Ronald Nichols Jr. (Rachael), and Paul Nichols (Jackie); 8 step-grandchildren: Ben Miller (Laura), Alexis Altman (Eric), Dara Barker (Conan) Ronald Nichols III, Brittany Aronin (Phil), Katie Nichols, Kane Dennis, and Jonathon Nichols, and three step great grandchildren Jude Miller, Tobias Miller, and Andrew Schwartz.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 41 years, Annalee Messick Rieck; brothers John, Carl, Stanley, and August, a sister Rowena Slacum, and a son-in-law, John Gulick.
Funeral Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Preston, MD on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 1 pm with a viewing two hours prior to the service. Interment will be at Junior Order Cemetery in Preston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Parking Lot Fund or Choir Fund, P.O.
