Hilda S. (Sanders) Britton's Obituary
Hilda Sanders Britton
Easton, MD; Hilda Sanders Britton, of the Towson Sanders family, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2012, at the William Hill Manor, Easton, Md; just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Her branch of the Sanders clan has been a part of Maryland since the 1700’s, when a British soldier of that same name decided to become a part of our new nation and settle here after the Revolutionary War. Hilda was the last of the family to reside in Towson. The eldest of five children born to Harry and Belle Sanders, she presided over our family for almost a century, most of her last 60+ years from Providence Rd. in Towson, in one of two adjacent houses built by her brothers John and Paul Sanders (while they were both aircraft mechanics for Glen L. Martin Company). For the last ten years, she had been cared for by her niece Patti Bond until deteriorating health forced her into a nursing home in 2010.
Hilda was something of a pioneer. Decades before it was common, or commonly accepted, she had a professional career as a respected administrator in the purchasing department of Black & Decker plant in Towson, meeting and marrying her husband, Dick Britton there, and eventually retiring from the company after 40 years of dedicated service; she also served as business manager for the Wilson United Methodist Church in Long Green for almost as many years. In retirement, she decided to see the world, traveling with church friends to such far –off lands as Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece and France, until her age grounded her, however, she never lost the spirit of adventure that characterized her life. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate, Dick, as well as her four younger siblings and their loved ones: Her baby sister Virginia Sanders Bond younger brothers; John and his wife Betty; Paul and his wife Sara ( an exotic émigré from Egypt who also went by Clairette) and Wilson who died at a young age. She is survived by a brother-in-law and avid sports fisherman Earl Bond of St. Michaels, Roxanne Sanders of Miami, FL; and Claudia Sanders of Miami and Toronto, Canada; and nephew Ron Sanders of Virginia. She is also survived by Piper the wonder dog, dear family friend Robert, who was always there to lend a helping hand and many great-nieces ands nephews.
Hilda will be buried in the Dulaney Valley Memorial Park, Towson. MD.
Arrangements are by the Hurley & Ostrowski Funeral Home P.A. of St. Michaels, Maryland.
