James Gencel, Sr.'s Obituary
James Stanley “Pop” Gencel, Sr., age 86, of Hurlock, MD, died Saturday, September 01, 2007 from cancer at The Pines, Easton, MD.
Born on June 18, 1921 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Julius Gencel and Leokada Povarski Gencel.
Mr. Gencel had served his country in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Gencel was a retired correctional officer at the Jessup Prison House of Corrections.
His first wife of forty nine and a half years was the former Lillian Kruszewski. She died in 1990.
In 1965 his family moved from Glen Burnie, MD. From that time until 1990 they were poultry growers.
On June 23, 1995 Mr. Gencel married the former Phyllis Harrison.
“Pop” as he was affectionately known liked boating, fishing and card playing.
His memberships included the American Legion Post 70, Easton, MD, VFW Post 5246, Federalsburg, and the Knights of Columbus, District 13-Michael J. McGivney Council 7025, Glen Burnie, MD, and the Easton Moose Lodge #1520.
Surviving besides his wife of seventeen years Phyllis Harrison Gencel of Hurlock, MD are six children Mary Ann Jones and her husband Albert of Odenton, MD, James Gencel of Pennsylvania, Cathy G. Prouse and her husband Bob of Federalsburg, MD, Theresa McMahan and her husband Gerald also of Federalsburg, MD, Paul Gencel and his wife Dawn of Preston, MD, very special nephew John Gencel of Dundalk, MD, very special niece Lorraine Szrama of Florida, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, three step-children Sharon Apple and her husband James of Easton, MD, Thomas Harrison of Cordova, MD and Diane Harrison of Easton, MD, three step-grandchildren and one great-step-grandchild, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and first wife was a daughter Bernardine Larrimore, three sisters Helen Bock, Seili Seato, Stella Maute, a brother Paul Gencel, and niece Rose Gencel.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 5th at Framptom Funeral Home, P.A., 216 N. Main St., Federalsburg from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. where the funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Nevin Crouse. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors.
Pallbearers will be Mr. Gencel’s grandsons Michael Willoughby, David Willoughby, Randy Carles, Richard Larrimore, Joseph Larrimore and John Harrison.
