Joan Todd Coppinger's Obituary
Joan Todd Coppinger, 88, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2022 at Harrison Assisted Living in Georgetown, Delaware after an extended period of failing health. Before living at Harrison House, she had made her home in Berlin, Maryland then Seaford, Delaware.
She was born on July 19, 1934 in Berlin, Maryland and was the daughter of the late Angus Jerald Todd and Helen Rivers (Phillips) Todd.
Joan was born and raised in Berlin, Maryland and attended the local schools there until 1965 when she relocated to Delaware.
Joan was a homemaker and loved cooking. She spent many hours cooking for her family and baking desserts for local restaurants in Seaford, Delaware. Joan enjoyed reading and had a vast collection of books. She also cherished time spent with her family and friends. Her favorite pastime was doing what she loved best; walking the beach. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling with her sister "Dolly".
In 1983, Joan retired to Myrtle Beach, SC but relocated back to Seaford in 1997 to be closer to her granddaughters; Lauren and Shelby. Joan enjoyed dancing and won many "shag" contests while living in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Joan loved her church family very much and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Seaford and attended regularly before her health began to decline. She also attended Mary Martha Sunday Morning Worship Classes. Joan had been a charter member of Berlin First Baptist Church in Berlin, Maryland.
Joan was a member of Moose International - Seaford Moose Family Center #1728 and a member of The Women of the Moose.
Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husbands William Vick and Andrew Coppinger. She was also preceded in death by her daughter Marsha Lynn Leiter, sisters Julia Ellennette Todd Harmon, Helen Lujane Todd Adams (Dolly), brothers William Carson Todd, Deane Olin Todd, Phillips Angus Todd, Robert Walston Todd and Wayne Ivan Todd.
Joan is survived by a daughter, Kathy Dennis Ruf (Craig) of Federalsburg, Maryland; granddaughters Lauren Ruf Jackson (Trent) of Cambridge, Maryland; and Shelby Elizabeth Ruf of Easton, Maryland and great-grandchildren Maris Elise and Ford Jackson. Dear to her wer her many nephews and nieces, especially Joel J. Todd, and nieces Hannah Todd Wilgus, Patty Todd Thomas and a very special caretaker Angel Long.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 11:00 at the Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg. The family will receive friends from 10-11. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brandywine Valley SPCA or the Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter.
