Jack and I were classmates at STC, Salisbury. He was my student teaching partner in 4th grade at the Campus School. We had "too much fun" observing in Mrs. Louise White's classroom and had to be quieted down! I remember the wedding at Immanuel Church and gathering at The Black Kettle. Annalee and Harry were good friends of my husband, Bob and provided many Christmas treats and homemade bread to us. Fond memories.

There are so many wonderful things that can be said about a teacher. We can talk about how they inspire and form childrens' minds and build character from a young age. In observing Mr. Messick's 5th grade class when my daughter, Melissa had him I knew immediately she was lucky to be taught by him. During that year I saw several students that struggled through other grades excel because of his out-of-box approach and bigger than life personality. Loved him for that.
I am sorry for what you are going through, but keep the memories that we have and to say goodbye to an exceptional teacher and bigger than life pillar in so many lives. Also let us not forget the history that he stylishly lived as a young lad of the Choptank River Lighthouse in the summers, to his residence site of the Patty Cannon's House. My condolences to a life well sharing lived!

I go to be in his first 5th grade class at Hurlock Elementary. We were so lucky because we didn't have any homework!! He always had kind, supportive words when I got to see him later as an adult, words that make you continue believe in yourself. Thank You Mr. Messick!

I met “Skipjack” 20 years ago on an Orioles fan forum. What whit, wisdom, and humor he shared! Since then, I’ve been honored to meet him and family members. God bless this subtle man and his intelligence. Thanks for sharing it all with us. Much Love!

I had Mr. Messick the year he left teaching to return to the marines. He was an excellent teacher who loved his subject and was enthusiastic about making sure we learned it. He ran a tight ship. He was one of those teachers you definitely wanted to have again. I am glad he returned to teaching upon his return from the military because he gave so much to his students. My condolences to his family on your loss of this fine gentleman.
