John Anthony Smith's Obituary
John Anthony Smith of Tilghman, MD passed away on June 18, 2025 at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center in Easton. He was 98 years old.
Born October 3, 1926 in Baltimore to the late John Smith and Lillian Fuller, John attended Baltimore City public schools in his youth.
On February 1, 1947, he married Rhoda R. Spiropoulos of Baltimore. They were married 62 years until her death in 2009.
John worked at F.W. Woolworth in Baltimore in retail management for 35 years. He also worked for Hechinger and W. Bell and Company in customer service. In addition, he worked in the produce department at Graul's Market in St. Michaels.
John and Rhoda moved from Baltimore to Tilghman where they resided until their death. He was a member of Tilghman Methodist Church in Tilghman. John was an avid gardener and he liked sitting on his back deck. He also enjoyed boating and fishing with family and friends. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Rhoda, a son Daryl, and a great-granddaughter Bailey Malecki, as well as two brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his sons: David (Karen) of Tilghman, MD and Dwayne (Kathryn) of Richmond, VA; a daughter: Diane (Darryl) of Church Hill, MD; as well as eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion Elizabeth Gifford of Wittman. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially his neighbors and many friends.
A service will be held on June 26, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Tilghman Methodist Church, 5731 Black Walnut Point Road, Tilghman, MD 21671. Burial will be private following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to Talbot Hospice (586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601) or Tilghman Methodist Church (5731 Black Walnut Point Road, Tilghman, MD 21671).
