Joyce Cummings (Cummings) Hogan's Obituary
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. — Joyce Cummings Hogan, 63, passed away in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sept. 14, 2012. Born in Easton on Dec. 14, 1948, she was the daughter of Dorothy and Gorman Cummings.
She went to school on Tilghman Island and in Easton. She received her undergraduate education at Towson University in Baltimore, and received a master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) at the University of Maryland. She was the first Director of Women’s Athletics and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1982, she moved to Oklahoma to be a Professor of Psychology and start a Ph.D. program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at the University of Tulsa. A former editor of a professional journal, and active member of numerous professional associations, Joyce was the author of more than 200 scholarly papers, chapters, and books. With her husband Robert, she pioneered the use of personality measures to help organizations make better personnel and leadership decisions. In 1989, they founded Hogan Assessment Systems (HAS), the leading provider of internet personnel assessments in the world. Joyce was a good athlete and a nationally ranked squash player. She was renowned for her sharp wit, fierce intellectual integrity, and relentless commitment to social justice. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by many whose lives have been forever changed by her abundant kindness. She will be missed. Services will be private.
