Joyce Phillips Hess' Obituary

She was born on December 19, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of the late Levi B. Phillips and Cora Mae Schaffer Phillips.
She graduated from Cambridge High School with the class of 1958.
She marred Wayne Hess and they made their home in Cambridge. Her home was a sanctuary of kindness and generosity, often filled with the sounds of joyful gatherings. She was an exceptional hostess, known for her keen attention to detail and her extraordinary culinary skills, able to whip up delicious meals that delighted family and friends alike.
The Hess household became a cherished gathering place for neighborhood children, who fondly remember the many pool parties that Joyce and Wayne graciously hosted. Under Joyce's care, the home radiated warmth and hospitality, and with something good in the oven.
A woman of deep faith, Joyce found strength and solace in her Christian community. Throughout her lifetime, she attended Cambridge Christian Fellowship, the Cambridge Church of God, and later His Lighthouse Fellowship Church in Federalsburg. It was within these sacred spaces that she forged enduring friendships, forming bonds that enriched her life immeasurably.
Joyce's love extended beyond her family to the many animals she cared for over the years. Often accompanied by loyal dogs and affectionate cats, she welcomed these furry companions into her life, finding joy and laughter in their presence.
She is survived by a son, J. Erik Hess and his wife Carol of Knoxville, TN, and two granddaughters: Nina and Gretchen; and sister Priscilla Khweis of Arizona.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Brad Hess and a sister Cora Lee Mowbray.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 11:00 at the Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg. The Reverend George Wheatley will officiate. Interment will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery near Beulah. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00.
