Karen Stewart Grosh's Obituary
Karen Stewart Grosh of Wittman, MD journeyed on to be reunited with her loved ones Friday, March 1, 2024. Born in 1952 in Easton, MD to Viva Louise Stewart and Edward Stewart, Karen took great pride in being an 11th generation native of the Bay Hundred area. She and her siblings grew up exploring the wonders of the eastern shore that Karen loved so much, picking blackberries along the railroad tracks and softcrabbing along the shoreline.
Never far from the water, Karen went on to serve in the Navy as an operating room technician, fulfilling her passion for both science and caretaking while doing her country and family proud. While stationed at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, she met the man who would later become her husband, Michael.
In Michael, Karen found a partner who loved the Chesapeake Bay as much as she did, and together they lived and sailed for years aboard their vessel, Checkmate. Whether solo or with their children they enjoyed adventures and misadventures by both land and sea, from riding out hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, to nearly toppling off cliff-edges in their diesel camper truck.
When not off getting into trouble with her family, Karen could most likely be found cooking them fabulous meals, playing in her garden, and generally turning a house into a home. In addition to caring for her own children, Karen spent countless hours helping other children in the community by teaching them to read. She was both highlighted in The Star Democrat and honored by the Governor for her volunteer work at Tilghman Elementary School.
No matter what she was doing, or who she was busy caring for, Karen was always happiest with her fingers in the garden soil and her toes in the marsh mud. She would like those who knew her best to think of her when the geese are flying overhead. When the softcrabs are running. When the marsh grass bends in the wind. Think of her then because these were the moments Karen loved most, and she inspired those around her to love them as well.
Karen is survived by her husband Michael; daughters Claire Buecker (Robert), Sarah Grosh, and Dawn West (Steve); grandchildren Clark West, Jane Twigg, Eleanor Twigg, and Robert Buecker IV; brother Alan Stewart (Sharon), and sister Kathy Stewart.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Framptom Funeral Home-Ostrowski Chapel in St. Michaels, MD Friday, March 15th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bellevue Passage Museum, a local organization Karen dearly hoped would receive support.
