Laurene Ogden Leids Zuker-Moreland's Obituary
Laurene Ogden Leids Zuker Moreland of Easton, MD died Wed. May 2, 2012 at Candle Light Cove in Easton. She was 95.
Born at Clarion, PA on June 3, 1916, Mrs. Moreland was the daughter of the late Eugene Leidig Leids and the late Fleeta Laurene Ogden Leids-Noel.
She graduated from the Clarion Public School System in 1934, and then attended Schools of Beauty Culture in Pittsburgh, PA and DuBois, PA, earning a Teacher’s degree. She also attended Strayers Business College in Baltimore, MD.
In 1943, she became a Federal government employee at the Social Security Administration, Baltimore, working in the Reports Processing and Payroll and Leave Services. In 1952, she transferred to the Veteran’s Administration Hospital at Loch Raven Blvd. in Baltimore. She worked in the Administrative area, as secretary to the Hospital Director. In 1973 she retired with 30 years of Federal
Government service. After her retirement and moving to the Eastern Shore she enjoyed working as a secretary at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Easton. Mrs. Moreland was a former member of the Parkvill Order of the Eastern Star, National Secretaries Association, (Monumental Chapter); AARP, NAREE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees) Easton Chapter, and the Community Club of Preston.
Mrs. Moreland enjoyed opportunites to travel to foreign countries and visited Puerto Rica, attending a National Secretaries Association Convention. Later she took sight-seeing trips to the British Islands, as well as France, Germany, Holland, Italy and Jerusalem. In domestic travel she visited a number of areas in the United States, and visited Canada and Mexico. In earlier years, Mrs. Moreland was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Clarion, PA. Later, while living in Baltimore, she belonged to Christus Victor Lutheran Church at Carney, MD. After marriage to Mr. Moreland, she transferred membership from Immanuel Lutheran Church at Easton to Harmony United Methodist. She also worshipped at Bethlehem Wesleyan Church. Mrs. Moreland attended church regularly, and participated in church and community activities, which gave her much pleasure during her working and retirement years.
She was first married to the late Charles Jerrald Zuker of Dayton, Ohio in 1946 after he returned from the U.S. Army Air Force in the Pacific War Zone. They resided in Baltimore until his death in 1977. In 1979, she moved to Easton, living with two devoted friends: Mrs. Evelyn Keys and the late Mrs. Dorothy
Findling, until she married Harry Franklin Moreland in 1986. They resided in Harmony, near Preston, MD until his death in 2003.
She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Jean Marie Kahle of Clarion, PA, and Mrs. Joan Caldwell of Bloomington, CA, a cousin, Mrs. Jill Mowry of Butler, PA, and second cousins, Mrs. Marta Jan Weaver of Knoxville, PA and Mrs. Sarah Lynn Hollobaugh of Butler, PA and their families, three step sons, Harry F. Moreland, III and his wife, Elaine, Randall A. Moreland and his wife, Anne, and their daughter, Kali, and Richard T. Moreland, all residing in the Denton-Preston area. Besides her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Leidig “Gene” Leids, Jr. who resided in Cheektawaga, NY.
