Lorraine Brummell Smith's Obituary
On Friday, October 1, 2021 a host of angels escorted our dearly beloved Aunt, Lorraine Brummell Smith, to her eternal home. With everlasting gratitude for her life, her labor; the things she taught; the love she gave; and the inspiration she bestowed, we set aside this day to remember her smile, her laughter, her kindness and dedication to her family and friends. She was the third daughter of the late Ethel Viola Prattis Brummell and the late Charles Elmer Brummell, Sr. She was born on October 15, 1946 in Federalsburg, MD.
Lorraine was educated in the Caroline County Public School System and graduated from Lockerman High School, the Class of 1965. She married Jimmie Smith of Wilson, NC, on August 21, 1971.
Lorraine grew up attending Timothy Farmer Memorial Church of God in Christ in Preston, MD. While living in Washington, DC, she was a member of the New Bethel Church of God in Christ. She also fellowshipped with members of the Word of Life Family Ministries, Inc. in Federalsburg, MD.
After graduating from Lockerman, she relocated to Washington, DC to continue her education. Her professional career began in the private sector for ten years. After her period of time with the private sector, she went on to work for the United States Government, Department of Veterans Affairs. As an IT Specialist, she traveled constantly to the VA Office in Austin, TX. She also was an instructor and taught computer training classes at the VA Central Office in Washington, DC. During her tenure at the VA, she received numerous awards, plaques, and accolades. After 32 years of exemplary service in the federal government, she retired from the VA in 2007 and returned to her hometown of Federalsburg, MD.
Lorraine had a passion for growing plants, especially African Violets and Coleuses. She enjoyed going to garden centers as she liked all types of flowers and getting them at a discount made her so happy. She was an enthusiastic member of a bowling league, a movie buff with countless DVDs, a vinyl record collector, and a booklover. Her favorite pastime was playing slots. She spent many vacations cruising to the Carribean, San Juan, St. Thomas, The Bahamas, Nassau, Aruba, Grenada, Paradise Island, Cayman Islands and Guadeloupe-she enjoyed life! She also enjoyed hosting holiday family dinners at her home in Silver Spring and Federalsburg. Let's not forget how she loved a cup of black coffee. If you knew Lorraine, you knew she was one of the kindest women God created and she loved her family dearly.
Lorraine leaves cherished loving memories to her godson, D'Angelo Brummell of Mitchellville, MD; two sisters-in-law, Jean Prattis of Chesapeake, VA and Vera Brummell of Mitchellville, MD, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends and two extraordinary friends Mary Milbourne of Upper Marlboro, MD and Gloria Baltimore of Preston, MD.
