Lucille C. Slacum's Obituary
Mary Lucille Cohee Slacum, 88, of Seaford, DE, passed away at Delaware Hospice Center on Friday, June 1, 2018.
Lucille was born on a farm in Hurlock, MD on January 9, 1930, the daughter of the late Mary Olevia and Gilbert Walter Cohee.
She graduated from Hurlock High School in 1947 and started her life as a secretary for Bay Country Foods in Easton, Maryland. She was then hired by the DuPont Company as an executive secretary in Seaford. She later resigned from DuPont to attend the New York School of Floral Designing in New York. Upon her graduation in 1957, she and her husband opened a flower shop in Federalsburg, named “Lucy’s Flowers” and a second Lucy’s Flowers on High Street in Seaford. A third flower shop was opened in 1960 on Pennsylvania Ave. in Seaford and was named, “Seaford Flowers”, after the city. This shop is still active in Blades, Delaware. For many years she served as district office secretary for the Seaford School System. Later she became a licensed realtor from 1979 to 1998.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church near Oak Grove, Order of the Eastern Star- Chapter 51, Sussex County Realtors, and Seaford School District Secretaries.
Lucille found great joy in planting flowers and vegetables with her husband on their little mini “Fox Run Farm”. She composed poetry almost every day and was awarded many times for her poems that were published.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leon G. Slacum and two brothers, Ralph and Norman Cohee.
Lucille is survived by her son Jon I. Dyer of Seaford, DE; two sisters, Josephine Mills and Joyce McWilliams and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on June 23, 2018 at Bethel Church Community House, Seaford, DE.
