Margaret "Peggy" Messick Roberts' Obituary
Margaret “Peggy” Cralle Messick Roberts, age 76, passed away at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD, on February 12, 2012, following a lengthy illness.
She was born on February 12, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Edward and Rose Ischer Cralle. She moved with her parents in 1950 from Upper Darby, PA, to Federalsburg, MD and graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1954. On October 29, 1955 she married her first husband, William J. “Bill” Messick and resided in Federalsburg until 1992 when they moved to nearby Seaford, DE.
Peggy was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker who would later build a successful career outside of the home as a personnel director for Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, MD. While still working in personnel, she managed to complete her travel industry certificate program, and became a certified travel consultant in 1982. She retired from Dorchester General Hospital in 1985, but continued to work as a part time travel consultant for Smith Travel in Easton, MD and then later for Ambassador Travel in Seaford, DE, until 2000.
Peggy was married at Dover Air Force Base, DE, to her second husband, Edward Roberts, Sr., on June 16, 2010. They especially enjoyed their winters together in Florida, visiting friends, shopping, travel, and playing bridge. Peggy was well-known for organizing group trips and cruises, entertaining bridge luncheons, and cooking. Like her mother before her, she was an expert seamstress. Peggy was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church in Federalsburg, MD. She sang in the church choir and volunteered whenever needed. In 2011 Peggy was accepted into membership of the Daughters of the American Revolution; she had been looking forward to her continued civic involvement prior to her illness.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Edward Roberts, Sr. of Seaford, DE; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Christopher Williamson of Saint Leonard, MD; two sons, Mark Messick and W. Sterling Messick both of Seaford, DE,; grandson and his wife, Nicholas and Monica Williamson of Odessa, FL; grandson, James Messick of Seaford, DE,; grandson and his wife, Luke and Brittany Williamson of Port Republic, MD; granddaughters, Emily Messick of Jacksonville, NC and Amy Messick of Seaford, DE; and a great grandson, Luke Williamson, II. She is further survived by cousins, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William J. “Bill” Messick, a former mayor of Federalsburg, MD.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2012 at Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg, MD, with Rev. Dan Walker officiating. Arrangements are being made through Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg, MD. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to the choir fund at Christ United Methodist Church c/o Gloria Dill, 2704 Lorraine Avenue, Federalsburg, MD 21632.
