Marie Odessa Simms' Obituary
Marie Odessa Conway Simms of Federalsburg passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Caroline Nursing Home in Denton surrounded by her loving family. She was 76.
She was born in Seaford, DE, on October 3, 1940, the daughter of the late Henry C. Powell and Sara Conway and raised by Hattie Conway Coleman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo "Biggie" Simms.
Marie graduated from Mace's Lane in Cambridge in 1958 and continued her educated at Salisbury University. She had worked for Dorchester County Schools as a teachers aide at Hurlock Elementary for many years. She also worked as a home health care aide. Marie was a member of the Misson Hill Apostolic Church in Hurlock for over 40 years and served as the Mother of the Church. She was a mother figure to so many people and loved and nurtured all those who came around her.
She is survived by five children, Terry Simms of Hurlock, Derek Simms and his wife, Christine Aldridge of Cambridge, Andre Simms and his companion Felecia of Federalsburg, Kendall Simms of Hurlock, Jeffrey Alonzo Simms and his wife Danielle, of Cambridge, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, seven siblings, Evonne, Patricia, Arlene, Henry, Deborah, Valarie, and Derek Powell all of Milford, DE, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, She also leaves to mourn, Lydia Roberts, who she accepted as a daughter, and Carl Smith who helped give her care along the way. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Cannon Payton.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 31, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg with Bishop Charles Cephas officiating. Interment will follow at Federal Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10-11 a.m.
