Marilyn Joyce Barrett's Obituary
Marilyn Joyce Barrett (née Kniebes) of Saint Michaels died peacefully in her home on December 14, 2023. Lynn was born in Coloma, Michigan on September 4, 1931 to Neva and Chester Kniebes. She went to school in Benton Harbor and played saxophone in her high school marching band. Lynn studied pharmacology at the University of Michigan. There she met her future husband, Robert Kaye Barrett, who was attending the university after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Robert's employment after graduation took them to the Washington, DC area and to Germany for several tours of duty. In Germany, the family enjoyed biking, hiking and skiing. After the family moved to Severna Park, Maryland, Lynn went back to college and received a bachelor's degree in library sciences at the University of Maryland and her master's degree at Towson State. She worked as an elementary and middle school librarian and media specialist for 15 years before retiring. While living in Severna Park, Bob and Lynn became avid sailors and spent many years sailing the Chesapeake. They often went on sailing trips with the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, and they spent two winters on their boat in the Bahamas. When on land, they often played tennis. Lynn remained an active member of her tennis league until her mid-eighties.
After Bob retired in 1982, they moved to St. Michaels. They volunteered regularly at the local library and at Christ Church. Marilyn served on the education committee of the League of Women Voters. She enjoyed going to the opera and DAR meetings with her daughter. She loved wintering with her sons and their families in Florida. Her vibrant smile and outgoing personality made her loved by many Floridians, as well as the friends she had in Maryland.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Michael (Beth), Melissa, and Brian (Linde), her grandchildren, Jennifer (Christian), Barbara (Ben), Lauren, Susan (Cruz), Elyse (Toshe) and Kiefer, and her great-grandchildren Alysson, Astrid, Robert, Tommy, Anastasia, and Yuna.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Saint Michaels on January 20, 2024 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Christ Church, St. Michaels Parish, 301 S Talbot Street, St. Michaels, MD 21663, or Talbot Hospice, 586 Cynwood Dr, Easton, MD 21601-3805.
