-- Mary Lou Merriken (Lou) died Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Talbot Hospice in Easton. She was 84.
Lou was born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 25, 1931 to Kennard Pinder and Mary Pinder. She graduated from the University of Delaware and then moved to Denton, Maryland, where she worked as a physical education teacher. While there, she met her future husband, John R. Merriken, and they were married in 1955. Lou then became a homemaker, raising four sons with John.
John and Lou lived in Severna Park, Maryland before moving to Royal Oak in the 1970s. Lou was a long-time member of the Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels, and she remained active bowling and playing tennis. She regularly worked as a volunteer at the Hospital Commission Shop in Easton. She also went on numerous family camping trips, first in a pop-up camper, and later in recreational vehicles. John and Lou also wintered in Florida following John’s retirement.
Lou is survived by her husband, John R. Merriken of Royal Oak; her sons, Robert Merriken of Easton (and his wife, Susan), Dave Merriken of St. Michaels, Brian Merriken of St. Michaels, and Bruce Merriken of Newcomb; her grandchildren, Danny Merriken of Kent Island (and his wife, Stephanie), Emily Merriken of Asheville, North Carolina; Lucas Merriken of St. Michaels, and Lauren Merriken of St. Michaels; her great grandchildren, Parker Merriken and Paige Merriken, both of Kent Island; her sister Anne Horton (and her husband, Ray) of Wilmington, Delaware, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church, 301 S. Talbot Street, St. Michaels, MD 21663.
