Mary Ann Thomas
St. Michaels, Mary Ann Thomas of St. Michaels, MD passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday November 24, 2013. Known to her many friends and family as Susie, she was 84 years old. Originally from Ambridge, PA she held a BA in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 1951 she married Robert E. Thomas of Knox, PA. While raising their family of four children she was also employed as a part time teacher for the Sacred Heart and Avonworth School districts. She was also certified through Duquesne University as a C.C.D. teacher for Sacred Heart Parish in Emsworth, PA. At Sacred Heart Church she was active in the Ladies Auxiliary and as a parent volunteer for the Sacred Heart School. Throughout her life, Mrs. Thomas was an activist for hunger. With the help of her husband and a dear cousin she operated a food bank from her home. She accepted referrals from local agencies and willing filled shopping bags full of food for any family in need. Throughout her life she worked tirelessly to feed the hungry. Mrs. Thomas is survived by a brother Girard Timney and his wife Sandy of Houston Texas, her four children: Joni Doolin and her husband Wally of St. Michaels, MD. Robert Thomas and his wife Rose of Denton, MD, William Thomas and his wife, Diane of St. Michaels MD, and Nancy Thomas of Dallas, TX. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Angelia, Shannon, Melissa, Ryan, Michael, Katelyn, and Zoe. In addition she is survived by many nieces, nephews, and great grand children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert E. Thomas. Friends will be received at the Ostrowski Funeral home on Talbot Street in St. Michaels on Wednesday, November 27 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. A Catholic Liturgy for the burial of the dead will be offered at 7:30 pm, conducted by The Reverend Mark Kelleher. The family will hold a graveside service at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. James Cemetery in Sewickley, PA. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Michaels Food Pantry in care of Christ Church, PO Box ‘S’, St. Michaels MD. 21663.
