Dr. Flye performed my kidney transplant at Duke when I was 20, nearly 50 years ago. It is still going strong. What I remember is his kindness. He bought and brought me a book to read, Watership Down. On that same visit to my hospital room, he brought his young son along. It means so much for a doctor—perhaps especially a surgeon—to show you their humanity and treat you as a complete person, not just a broken body. That’s why I still remember his name to this day. I’m grateful to have known him.
