Norma Jean Higgins' Obituary
Norma Jean (Sauble) Higgins passed away peacefully at Talbot Hospice on April 23, 2023. She was 84 years old.
Born to Stewart and Elizabeth Sauble on October 12, 1938 in York, PA, she and her siblings moved to Easton, MD at an early age due to the death of her father. She graduated from Easton High School in 1957 where she had met the love of her life, Richard D. Higgins, Jr. (Dickie) as well as many lifelong friends. They married on June 29, 1958 and celebrated their 64th anniversary last year.
She and Dickie worked side by side, along with his parents Richard Sr. and Edith Caulk Higgins at the family seafood business, Richard Higgins Soft Crabs in Neavitt, MD. She and Dickie eventually took over the business, making improvements to the shedding process and delivery of their product. They also established Professional Guide Service, Inc. in 1980, providing guided deer and goose shoots to avid hunters, many of whom became loyal customers. Both businesses continue operations today.
Norma wore many "hats" for those businesses while also raising her children and being a housewife. She was the backbone of her family and all their endeavors. Nothing was more important to her than her children feeling secure in a loving home. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was happiest when hosting holiday and special occasion feasts for family and friends. Her biscuits are legend in Talbot County.
She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2019 and proceeded with operations and chemotherapy. Ever the optimist, she believed she could beat that horrible disease. Norma fought valiantly until her last breath for over three years and countless procedures.
She is survived by her husband, Dickie Higgins of Neavitt, MD; daughters Jean Harrison Fisher (Glenn) of McDaniel, MD and Susan k. Higgins of Neavitt, MD; son Bradley E. Higgins (Suzanne) of St. Michaels, MD; grandchildren Christina Howard (Brian) of Ocean City, MD; Reece Harrison of Neavitt, MD and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Susan Harman Ireland of MA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, many siblings and a son, Mark Higgins.
A visitation will be held Thursday April 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Framptom Funeral Home-Ostrowski Chapel in St. Michaels, MD. Funeral services will be Friday April 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Bozman United Methodist Church with Pastor Marty Wiley officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
The family would like to thank Talbot Hospice for their support and care through this most difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Talbot Watermans Association, P.O. Box 324, Bozman, MD 21612
