Rebecca Groves Smith's Obituary
Rebecca Groves Smith, known fondly as “Becky”, of Easton, formerly of Federalsburg, passed away at William Hill Manor in Easton on Thursday, June 14, 2012. She was 95.
She was born November 5, 1916 in Kent Co., Maryland, the daughter of the late William Benjamin and Catharine Cooper Roe Groves. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, the Honorable Judge Marvin Hugh Smith on September 27, 2010.
She graduated from Chestertown High School Class of 1933, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937 from the former Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, where she had served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1976. She had been a school teacher, substitute teacher, and social worker. She was an active member of Union United Methodist Church where she served as President of the United Methodist Women for 14 years. She was a charter member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Caroline Unit #29, and served as District President of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the former Nanticoke Chapter O.E.S.. For many years she was a member of Caroline County Republican Women and served for five years as treasurer of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women. For forty years she was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by three children, Melissa Smith Barnes and her husband Leo of Littlestown, PA, M. Hugh Smith, Jr. and his wife Joanne of Denton and Sarah J. Smith Pettegrew and her husband John of Jacksonville, FL, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, four sisters, Ruth Groves Elliott and the Honorable Mary Roe Groves Walkup, both of Worton, Ethel Groves Brandon of Earlesville, and Virginia Groves Liddell of Federalsburg and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Anna Belle Darwin, and a brother, Bedford J. Groves, preceded her in death.
Funeral services for her will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg with Rev. Dan Gedman and Rev. David Heistand officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Friends may call at Framptom Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. An Eastern Star service will be held on Monday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
