Retta Mae Oney's Obituary
Retta Mae Oney of Laurel, DE, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, DE. She was 93.
She was born on May 8, 1920 in Mt. Nebo, DE. She was the daughter of the late William West and Clara Truitt West. She was happily married for 52 years to John H. Oney who preceded her in death in 1994.
She was a member of Ross Point Freedom Church, Seaford, DE. Previously she served for forty years as an active member of Ross Point A.M.E. Zion Church in Laurel, DE. Retta Mae Oney was well known for her singing voice of gospel songs. She started singing as a young child and became well known as a revealed gospel figure performing at many churches along the east coast.
She is survived by six children, Marie Jane Stanley of Federalsburg, John E. Oney of Monticello, NY, Doris Winder of Laurel, Sylvester Oney of Allentown, PA, Hilda Oney of Baltimore, and David Oney of Laurel, 21 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings: Curtis West, Granville “Bus” West, Clinton West and Frances Winder.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Citidel of Hope Deliverance Ministries, 25371 Honeysuckle Drive, Seaford. Friends may visit at the church from 10:00 to 12:00. Interment will follow at Ross Point A.M.E. Zion Churchyard.
