Richard G. Harmsen
St. Michaels, Richard George Harmsen, died at his home in St. Michaels on Sunday, March 10, 2013. He was 88. Born on November 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Hans Carl and Bertha Behrens Harmsen. He attended Talbot Co. public schools in Royal Oak and St. Michaels, where he graduated in 1942. Following his graduation, he worked at various jobs, including delivering milk for Koontz Dairies. He later began a career with Bayshore Foods, which became Con-Agra, working in the hatcheries in St. Michaels and Hurlock, and also working in Con-Agra sales. He retired in 2000. Mr. Harmsen’s wife of 45 years, Ann Baynard Harmsen, died in October 2006. Mr. Harmsen took great pride in providing care for his wife during her long illness; he never missed a day seeing to her every need. He also cherished his constant canine companion, “Muffin.” Mr. Harmsen was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, St. Michaels where he served on numerous committees, as well as being an usher for Sunday services. He is survived by his brother, Walter J. Harmsen of Cockeysville, MD; 5 nieces, Sue Edwards and Phyllis Cross both of CA, Patricia Mayer of Denton, MD, Shirley Hennessy of Manassas, VA, and Margaret Harmsen of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Lisa Irons, Brian Harrison, William Todd Zombro Laura Kuhns Stephen Mark Zombro and Kara Montour, One Great Nephew and 5 Great Nieces, his daughter-in-law, Beverly Flater of Denton, his companion Linda Jones of St. Michaels who cared for him with much love and support, and a step-daughter, Winona Davis of PA. He is also survived by his very special friends, Don Park and Kenny Bridges, who took him to breakfast on Tuesday mornings. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Harmsen, and sister, Louise Lindeman. Services will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Ostrowski Funeral Home, St. Michaels where friends may call from 10 to 11:00AM. Burial will be in Olivet Cemetery, St. Michaels.
