Robert Russell Edgell, Jr.'s Obituary
Robert R. Edgell of Federalsburg passed away, after a brief illness, on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Tidal Health - Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. He was 94.
Robert was born on the family farm at American Corner February 23, 1929 to the late R. Russell Edgell, Sr. and Clara Butler Edgell.
He graduated from Federalsburg High School with the class of 1946. After school Robert worked on the family farm until 1952 when he joined the U. S. Army (Army Security Agency). Robert then spent three years serving with the occupation forces in Germany during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to the farm and also worked part-time for the Postal Service as a mail carrier. Around this time Robert joined the Maryland State Police and served as a trooper retiring after 25 years of service. He married the late Eva Jane Bourgignon on April 6, 1963 and they made their home in Federalsburg.
Following his career with Maryland State Police, Robert worked for the town of Federalsburg and retired from there in 2003. During his second retirement he went to work for A & R Sales & Service as a runner until 2010.
Robert was also involved with many civic organizations and fraternal societies during his long life. He was a Mason for 66 years and was a member of Nanticoke Lodge #172 in Federalsburg as well as a Scottish Rite member (Valley of Salisbury). He also was Past Patron of Caroline Chapter #621 Order of the Eastern Star. Other organizations to which he belonged included VFW Post 5246, Federalsburg Historical Society, Colonel Richardson H. S. Alumni Association, and Maryland State Police Alumni Association.
Robert was also a former member and director of Camp ESPA. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with his family and rooting for his beloved Baltimore Orioles and Ravens.
Surviving Robert is his one son: Dana Edgell and his wife Lisa of Federalsburg; two grandchildren: Ryan Edgell and his wife Jeanna of Ocean Pines, MD; and Casey O'Bier and her husband Michael of Seaford; one great grandson: Liam O'Bier.
In addition to his parents and his wife of 60 years, he was preceded in death by Gladys E. McDorman, sister; Oscar W. McDorman, brother in law; Anna B. Hall, sister in law; and Ira E. Hall, brother in law.
Graveside services with Military and Maryland State Police Honors will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024 at 12:00 Noon at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Laurel, Delaware.
