Robert M. "Sonny" Johnson Sr.'s Obituary
Robert M. “Sonny” Johnson, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. He was 72.
He was born on July 23, 1941 in Easton, Maryland, the son of the late Justin Melvin Johnson and Helen Perdue Johnson Cook.
He married Phylis Butler Johnson on August 15, 1969. He started his life-long career as an auto mechanic at Hallowell Chevrolet and continued his work for the Maryland State Police. He retired in 1996 after 29 years of service.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and beloved pets, building race motors and restoring cars, spending many weekends at the Delmar US 13 Dragway burning rubber in his 1956 Nomad “Black Label”. He also enjoyed spending time working in his yard.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Phylis Butler Johnson of Preston, MD; two daughters, Linda Hall-Tetrick and her husband Greg of Ridgely, MD; Bobbi-Jo Hopkins and her husband Bo of Hurlock, MD; a son, Sonny Johnson, Jr and his wife, Stacie of Easton, MD; a step daughter, Terry Perry of Florida; ten grandchildren, Rob, Sydney, Mason, Riley, Sonny, Daniel, Hunter, Patrick, Quinn and Tanner; one great grandson, Jaxon; a sister, Linda Engle and her husband, Joe ”Grizz” of Preston, MD; three special nephews, E.J., Shawn and Travis and his beloved pets: Abbi, Copper, Vinni, Snook, Krispie Kreme and U.S. Cat.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Michelle Engle.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Reverend Denzil Cheek officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
