Robert L. Lippson's Obituary
Robert (Bob) Lloyd Lippson, Ph.D.
April 18, 1931 - December 22, 2024
Dr. Robert (Bob) Lloyd Lippson, a renowned invertebrate zoologist, passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Born on April 18, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to Jack and Shirley Lippson, Bob led a life filled with academic achievement, adventure, and deep connections to family and nature.
In 1942, the Lippson family moved to Miami Beach, Florida, where Bob graduated from
Miami Beach High School. In 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, and together
they had three sons: Steven (Toni Lippson), Kevin (deceased), and Jamie (deceased). Bob pursued higher education at Michigan State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in
Invertebrate Zoology.
In 1968, Bob relocated to Solomons, Maryland to head blue crab research at the
Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, University of Maryland. Following a divorce, Bob
married Alice Jane (AJ) Mansueti in 1972, and their family grew to include seven children.
Together, they raised Bob's three sons and AJ's four children: Lisa, Marisa (Roger
Myerberg), Christopher (deceased) (Joan Mansueti), and John (Laura Wood, former
spouse). Bob and AJ shared a passion for environmental education, co-authoring Life in the Chesapeake Bay, first published in 1984.
In 1970, Bob accepted a position at the Oxford Laboratory, prompting a family move to
Talbot County, Maryland. After retiring in 1990, Bob and AJ embarked on a new chapter of life. They commissioned the building of a boat, Odyssey, in Slidell, Louisiana and launched Chesapeake Nature Cruises. The couple offered educational cruises throughout the Chesapeake Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. Their travels inspired their second book, Life Along the Inner Coast, published in 2009.
Bob and AJ shared a wonderful life of adventure, learning, and love until AJ's passing on
April 8, 2021. Bob was known for his generous nature, profound knowledge of the natural world, and dedication to his family and his dogs. Bob's stories of his childhood in Detroit, growing up in Miami, and living on Maryland's Eastern Shore were numerous and full of wonder. His exceptional memory and enthusiasm made his stories come to life. He loved being surrounded by family and friends and was passionate about cooking and entertaining. Bob was always planning the "next dinner party." His outgoing personality
and sense of humor made everyone feel welcome.
Bob is survived by his sister, Ruth Sakowitz, his brother, Jerry King, and twelve
grandchildren who lovingly called him Pop Pop: Steven (deceased), Monica, Zachary, Seth, Tyler, Lindsay, Anna, Caroline, Sarah, Kathryn, Elizabeth, and Christopher (Jack). Bob is also survived by his four great grandchildren.
Dr. Lippson's legacy will live on through his family, his books, and the countless individuals inspired by his work in marine biology and environmental education.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 3rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Framptom Funeral
Home in St. Michaels, Maryland. As Bob cared deeply about environmental conservation,
the family requests that donations be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (cbf.org) in lieu of flowers.
