Robert Edward McConnell's Obituary
Robert Edward McConnell, formerly of Federalsburg and Preston, died on April 13, 2014 at Caroline Nursing Home, Denton, MD. He was 90.
Born in Chester, PA on March 29, 1924, he was the son of the late Dr. Dufferin McConnell and Katherine Kingan McConnell.
He graduated from Federalsburg High School. He was inducted into the US Army on March 31, 1943. During his service time, he served in action in the Rhineland in central Europe. He was a communication chief, sergeant first class. He earned the Army Occupation Metal in Germany, the American Theater Ribbon, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. World War Two Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Metal. He was honorably discharged on September 24, 1946 He was again called to duty during the Korean Conflict and served state side.
He attended Bliss Electrical School to become an electrician. He started working for Harper Electrical in Hurlock, Caroline Farms and later for M&M Refrigeration in Federalsburg. He retired in 2002.
He was a charter member of the VFW Post #5246, and member of the Hurlock American Legion Post #243. He was active for many years in the Boy Scouts, a scout master of the Preston Troop #461. He was an avid reader, sailor, and loved working in his garden. Always at work on one project or another.
He is survived by two children, four step-children, and their families. He was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Prouse, and two brothers, John McConnell and James McConnell.
Services were held Friday, April 18, 2014 at 12 p.m. at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD with the Reverend Denzil T. Cheek Officiating.
