Ruth Marie Decker's Obituary
Ruth Marie Decker passed away peacefully on November 17 at her home in Royal Oak, Maryland. She is survived by her husband Edwin of 70 years, three children and four grandchildren. The daughter of John and Mae Koch she was born on December 13, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, where she grew up during the depression with her brother John. She met her husband Edwin Decker at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and they were married on September 13, 1953. They later moved to East Meadow and then Oyster Bay, NY where they raised their three children. During that time she attended the French Fashion Academy in Manhattan to learn to sew and in 1974 received her Bachelor's Degree from SUNY Empire State College's Long Island Center. She went on to work for the college as a community relations counselor and was presented with the Alumni Student Association's Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Upon leaving Long Island, they established the Edwin and Ruth Decker '74 Scholarship to support female students. They went on to live in Minnesota, Connecticut and retired in Royal Oak Maryland. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in her ladies groups in all three places. A woman of great faith, she loved her family deeply and the peace of living by still waters.
