Sally R. Dunton
St. Michaels, Sally Reed Dunton of St. Michaels died on Monday March 4, 2013 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, following a fall at her home. She was 86. Born on August 29, 1926 in Manhattan, KS. She spent most of her early years in London, England, and Berlin, Germany where her late father Harry E. Reed was Agricultural Attaché to both countries. She and her twin sister, the late Susan King Reed, were home schooled by their mother, the late Florence Evans Reed. After graduating from Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., she attended Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, VA., and the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. In 1948 she transferred to the school of Aeronautical Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN., where she met her future husband, William H. Dunton. They both graduated with BS degrees in Aeronautical Engineering the day after their wedding in the College Chapel, on June 17, 1950. Sally and Bill worked as flight test engineers for the Curtis-Wright Corp. in West Caldwell, N.J. until their first daughter was born in 1955 and Bill was called up to serve in the U.S. Air Force. In 1961 Bill joined Boeing Helicopter Division in PA., where their three daughters grew up in Swarthmore, PA., and the family started sailing- cruising on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1987 they moved to Bozman- Neavitt RD. in St. Michaels, and joined the US Sail & Power Squadron, and the Cruising Sailors of St. Michaels. Sally taught piloting courses in the USS&P Squadron for three years and received an award from District 5. In addition to her loving husband, Sally is survived by her three daughters; Sue Myers of Lewes, DE., Kathy Metrick of New Tripoli, PA., and Cindy Thornton of Fulton, MD., eight grandchildren, and twin Great-granddaughters. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, St. Michaels, on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 2:00PM. A light reception will follow the service. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made in Sally’s name to; St. Luke’s United Methodist Church 304S. Talbot St. St. Michaels, MD. 21663 or to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, (Save the Bay) 6 Herndon Ave. Annapolis, MD. 21403. Arrangements are by the Ostrowski Funeral Home, St. Michaels, MD.
