Sterling Edward Payne's Obituary
Sterling Edward Payne passed away surrounded by loved ones at his home in Federalsburg following a long illness on Sunday June 7, 2026. He was 79 years old.
Born on June 17, 1946 in Easton, Maryland, Sterling was the son of the late Edward T. and Thelma L. Payne. He grew up in Eldorado, Maryland receiving his formal education in the local schools including Eldorado and North Dorchester High School. After school Sterling went to work in several different trades including farming and truck driving.
In 1988 Sterling married the former Lisa Shufelt. Together they made their home in Federalsburg. Eventually they opened their own business called Payne's Crusting, LLC. For over twenty years Sterling and Lisa were known for their quality work especially for the poultry farmers of the area.
When Sterling wasn't working he enjoyed watching NASCAR and was a Life Member of the VFW Auxiliary in Federalsburg. He often returned to his roots and would farm in his free time.
Left to mourn Sterling are his loving wife Lisa of thirty-eight years; his sister Patricia "Patsy" Collins; his nieces Karen Eppehimer (David), Lisa Rizia (Junior) and Debbie Outten (Bill); his nephew Nicky Calloway (Linda); his children Sterling Jr., Audra and Heath; and his extended special family of Robert and Macey Coulbourn and their five children.
Preceding Sterling in death were his sister Margaret "Peggy" Collins; his brothers-in-law Glenn Collins, William C. "Beaver" Collins and Jamie Shufelt; his nephew Ricky Calloway; and his mother-in-law Betty Shufelt.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026 at Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg starting at Noon. His family will receive friends and relatives during a visitation for one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will be private in Hillcrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions are asked to be made to Caroline County EMS, or to Framptom Funeral Home to help the family with funeral expenses
