I grew up just 3 houses from where Bill and Sally were raising their trio of three young ladies. There was always some fun project going on at their house. My favorite was their pet racoon who had his own cage built around an apple tree... lucky racoon!! Engineers build the darndest things.
Like Bill and Sally I loved airplanes and pursued aeronautical engineering at college. One day Bill pulled me aside while visiting home. He had been head of an engineering department at Boeing Vertol with 100 aeronautical engineers underneath him... very high powered! With the end of the Vietnam war the defense contracts dried up. All of the engineers in his department except for Bill and one other had their jobs terminated by Boeing. He gave me the best career advice I ever received: "If you love airplanes... do that as a hobby. If you want to put shoes on your children's feet, find a job that doesn't come and go with the whims of the government."
